Does St Mungo's take in homeless people and their pets?

Harvey ReedYes, St Mungo's does offer accommodation for people with pets - normally this is dogs, but we have people who come with other animals, in the past we have had a resident with two pet rats!

In one year, 3% of our residents (about 40 people) kept a dog as a pet in our hostels and semi-independent housing projects. As far as possible, we try to accommodate everyone who comes to us with a pet. Our projects which accept pets can have up to three pets at one time. We ensure our residents know how to look after their dogs and ensure they gain access to free veterinary treatment when their pets are unwell. The dogs in our hostels have become part of daily life and have proved very popular with other residents.

For just £10 you can support a homeless person and their dog as they recover from the traumas of homelessness. Help us give a dog a home.

To support residents with pets we work closely with two organisations:

The Dog's Trust support St Mungo's and our residents who have dogs. Among other services, their Hope Project provides free and subsidised veterinary treatment to dogs whose owners are homeless or in housing crisis. http://www.dogstrust.org.uk/az/h/hopeproject/default.aspx

The Mayhew Animal Home provide advice and guidance for residents with dogs. Their Animal Welfare Officers visit our projects to run sessions on looking after a pet, and carry out health checks. They give owners donated food for their pets, free worm and flea treatments, and a new collar and leash if they need it. Their Pet Refuge service also provides support if a dog owner needs to go into hospital or rehab. http://www.mayhewanimalhome.org/
