Peer Facilitators Course
Background
This is a eight session course to provide up to 12 clients with the skills, knowledge and confidence to facilitate meetings or conduct peer research with other clients. The overview of the sessions are as follows:
1. Introductory Session - To provide an overview of the course, get to know the facilitators and other participants, and dispel any fears that clients may have.
2. Communicating with Confidence - To enable participants to understand the benefits of good communication, what the barriers are to good communication and consider the different tools that can help improve communication.
3. It's Ok to be Me - Using Myers Briggs Type Indicator to give participants a deeper understanding of the differing gifts we have by virtue of our personalities; to understand how the differing ways we perceive and make decisions affect communication.
4. Assertiveness - To enable participants to understand the benefits of communicating assertively and to be better able to do so in different situations.
5. Our Role as Peer Facilitator - To enable participants to understand their role as a peer facilitator, including the importance of ground rules, confidentiality and meeting structure in enabling a meeting to be successful.
6. Managing the Process of a Meeting - To enable participants to consider their role as a peer facilitator in helping and empowering others to express their different needs and wishes and come up with possible ways forward.
7. Public Presentation Skills - For participants to develop their ability to give a short presentation and their ability to listen to and evaluate others presentations.
8. Learning and Utilising Your Skills - To enable participants to reflect on their learning from the Peer Facilitators course, and SMARTER plan how they will use this learning personally and for the organisation in the future.
