Mark Field MP visits Camden mental health project
Mark Field MP visited a specialist mental health project in Camden, and saw first hand the work of St Mungo's in helping clients deal with the challenges they face on their road to recovery.
The high support mixed project for people with mental health issues has 21 beds. Thirty-five percent of rough sleepers have a diagnosed mental health problem.
Mark Field MP said: "I am incredibly impressed by the efforts of St Mungo's to provide a seamless service to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. The team clearly does great work co-ordinating their efforts with other agencies and constantly tries new ideas and adapts the St Mungo's service to best suit the needs of their clients.
"Mental health and homelessness are currently seen as Cinderella areas but co-ordinated efforts on these twin issues can reduce the financial burden on other services and create lasting solutions to those who have fallen on hard times."
Tanya English, St Mungo's Executive Director of Fundraising and Communications, said: "Our Camden project provides 24 hour, 7 day a week staff support to people with mental health problems who are also socially vulnerable. The intensive and holistic support we provide is focused on recovery, making sure residents receive the healthcare they need, gain access activities to improve life and work-related skills and live their lives comfortably.
"In this our 40th anniversary year, St Mungo's is committed to shining the spotlight on homelessness and poor mental health. Unmet mental health needs amongst vulnerable adults puts them at risk of street homeless so the work we do in projects like this is an important part of the solution. We welcome Mark's interest in our work and look forward to working with him in the future on these issues".
