Update 17 June: Two St Mungo's projects - the Lodge (see below) and our Southwark-based Employment Team business hub - have made the six-strong shortlist for London Councils' 2011 Andy Ludlow Homelessness Awards Congratulations to these teams too!
St Mungo's achieved a top three place at two separate awards ceremonies last night, for work enabling homeless people to extend their skills and employment potential.
One of its projects, the Single Homeless Enterprise Project, was Highly Commended in the 2011 Charity Awards Education and Training category, announced last night, 9 June, at the Grosvenor Hotel, London.
SHEP was a three year project to provide training and work experience for St Mungo's residents, across three areas - painting and decorating; construction and music technology. Developed with the London Borough of Camden, SHEP has so far involved 177 clients, and of these 17 have moved into work. SHEP has now ended, the projects continue. ReVive, the St Mungo's social enterprise which provides painting and decorating, has completed £60,000 of decorating work, most of it gained through competitive tender.
Meanwhile, St Mungo's gardening volunteer project Putting Down Roots reached the final three in the Grassroots category of the Observer's 2011 Ethical Awards, also announced last night. PDR was pipped to the top prize by the Bristol bike project.
Putting Down Roots offers people offers opportunities to take up accredited training in horticulture and support in moving on to other training or work opportunities. The project's volunteer gardeners works across public and private gardens in London, and recently helped create the Southbank's Rooftop garden with designers from the Eden project.
Phil De Montmorency, Director of Skills and Employment Services, said: "To be shortlisted for one award is great but to have our work recognised in two awards on the same night highlights the breadth and scope of the team's work and commitment to helping our clients.
"Congratulations to them and to our clients, without whose enthusiasm and skills we would not have been nominated for either award. We will continue to innovate and develop new ways of enabling people to achieve their full potential."
These are the fourth awards this year for which St Mungo's had been shortlisted.
