Our substance use specialist workers

Last year 54% of St Mungo's clients had issues with substance use.

Our Substance Use specialist workers support each individual at his or her own pace, offering realistic and accessible solutions to drink and drug problems. Our services include:

  • auricular acupuncture
  • emergency (or hostel) accommodation
  • a move-on project for sex-working women who use crack.
  • delivering training including bespoke courses around homelessness and substance use

We also link people into a range of treatment services, including detox and rehab, methadone scripting, advice and counselling services, alternative therapies and support groups.

The Substance Use Team at St Mungo's is now paid for solely through fundraised money to provide substance misuse related support to staff and clients across Brent, Westminster, Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham in hostels and semi-independent housing settings.

Staff are DANOS qualified and provide a range of harm reduction interventions such as on site Needle Exchange, substitute prescribing, group work, acupuncture, assessment and care planning. They are also trained in psycho-social interventions and provide personalised, recovery focussed services to clients. Training and clinical support are offered both centrally and to individual projects.

The team work closely with a range of stakeholders from clients to commissioners and colleagues both within St Mungo's and externally to reduce the harm that substance misuse causes both directly and indirectly in people's lives.
